The cool thing about SharpKeys is it is open source. “Type Key” allows you to press the key on your keyboard and SharpKeys will detect and automatically select it for you (after you hit “OK”):

If you are not sure what the name of the key is that you want to change/change to, you can click on the “Type Key” button. Just select the key you want to change from the left, and select the key you want to change it to from the right. SharpKeys provides you with an extensive list of keys you can select from to remap: If you ever want to re-remap or undo the remapping you have done, all you need to do is run SharpKeys, edit or delete the remapping you want to change or undo, tell SharpKeys to “Write to Registry”, and then restart your computer or logoff and log back in. Once you have restarted/logged back in, the keys you remapped will start performing the new functions you assigned them. Once you have remapped to your heart’s content, you need to tell SharpKeys to “Write to Registry”, and then restart your computer or logoff and log back in. You run the program, and add all the remappings you desire (you can remap as many keys as you want). (Turn off a key or make a key do what a different key is supposed to do.) SharpKeys is a clever program that utilizes registry hacks to allow users to remap their keyboard keys. The post Windows Keyboard Mapping with SharpKeys appeared first on Helge Klein. Are you constantly hitting Caps Lock while typing? Have you ever hit the Windows key while playing a game and end up paying the ultimate price because of it? Do you want to play a cruel joke on someone? Sounds like SharpKeys may be a program you want to look into.

Note: This procedure has been tested on Windows 8.1 with Update. Just click Write to Registry, log off and back on (no need to reboot, either) and the changed keyboard layout should be in effect. There is no need to run SharpKeys all the time, by the way. With that missing information we can configure SharpKeys: Why, Special: Application (E0_5D), of course. There is really not much you have to do – except figuring out what the secret name of the context menu key is. And while we are at it we can also get rid of the useless Caps Lock.

Thankfully the free utility SharpKeys facilitates the process a lot. Windows has had a keyboard remapping functionality for some time, but it requires manipulation of REG_BINARY values, which even I as a developer am not too fond of.

But we can also go deeper and remap any useless key to function as context menu key. The simpler method is to just use Shift+F10 instead, as Tim Dunn explains. I am talking about the context menu key which I use a lot. Third, one essential key is … not there … simply missing. Second, the trackpad (Lenovo’s interpretation of a touchpad) is simply awful. I like my current laptop, a Lenovo W540, but details of the keyboard layout really deteriorate the user exeperience (not to mention the horrible trackpad – I can only recommend you carry a mouse or buy the successor which is rumored to sport a less terrible design).įirst of all, there is this totally useless numeric keypad, forcing asymmetric device usage. Or: Getting rid of Caps Lock & creating the missing context menu key
