A decription txt could define these shipsets usable or not usable as random AI choices. There could be "unclaimed" shipsets that look like race directories but contain only shipset files. Optionally one could choose a shipset associated to another race - if the shipset is of the race's preferred type. Why separating these into different directories? There's nothing wrong with having shipset images in the same directory as the one that contains images of the population that designed them, not to speak of insignias and leader images. The flags and shipset designs (or preferred alternatives), their tactics and preferred forms of government are all the products of their culture. I thought the starting population - the race - is the basis of everything else. Though I guess races could have a default AI which can be overridden by an empire this way you could set up Klingons to always be aggressive, unless you tell them not to be!Įd, I'm not sure I understand your idea completely. I like your hierarchy, but one change I'd make is to move the AI scripts out from the race and put them directly under the empire. almost like you're leaving a legacy every time you play emp as usable by the AI, in which case it may appear in your future games. emp files, and when you customize your empire in game setup, you have the option of flagging the customized. So essentially the Empires folder would just contain a bunch of. Human players would do this via the game setup screen, while AI players wouldn't bother customizing their empires they'd just use the defaults. from the defaults specified by the Empire. Yeah, I'm thinking the Empire (technically Empire Template, but from the perspective of setting up a game it can be called an Empire) will be able to be used both by human players and by AI players they can then customize it to their liking by changing the traits, aptitudes, race, shipset, etc. The exact mechanics of what kind of modifiers a race shares between empires are something else to figure out, but this would essentially treat the race like any other element you can choose to make up your empire. Thinking of it, it would also be kinda funny to assign default AI scripts to the different Leader portraits. Now, I picked up in another thread the idea of races which can be shared by empires. Generated empires would take these in the empire defined "defaults". Additionally, the shipset could have a "default" flag and the race icons offer one or multiple leader portraits without limiting you to those, still being able to choose any and all individual things. I would suggest making each point, shipsets, race/leader portraits, flags and scripts, dependant of the empire with the option for players to change them individually to any other option available. That's no space station - it's a spreadsheet! I think that's a worthwhile tradeoff, but I'd like to hear what others have to say I think this would be the most flexible option, since (for instance) several empires could reuse the same AI scripts, but it would also mean splitting up things that are kept together in the same folder in SE4. The empire files/folders would each contain references to the shipsets and such used by that empire, and those items would be located in other folders, e.g. You'd have a FrEee/Empires folder, and in that folder you'd have a bunch of files or folders, each representing an empire. I'm thinking it would make sense to have everything hang off the empire, but still be independent for use by multiple empires.
